Peace, Community, Nature; common resources we should protect and cherish.
Held dear by members of Birmingham’s Walsall Road Allotment as they fought off plans to develop the land for the 2022 Commonwealth games. Inspired by plot holders everyday acts of commoning; looking after the land and their community, this collectible enamel pin badge reminds us there are other ways to ‘own’.
Established in 1907 the plots were saved by a campaign spearheaded by charismatic Robert, (@AllotmentCat on Twitter), building on the internet’s fascination for cats which gathered 16,000 signatures globally in just three months. A commemorative token was made by artists Alice McLean & Justine Bousssard on which this badge is based.
