Session notes

Dual Works invited the group to participate in a design and make challenge in their studio.

Having a full days workshop at the Dual Works was such a great experience and opportunity. A unique set-up in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter, the design studio, showroom and school would be well at home in any creative district of London, making us very lucky to have such a place in the Midlands. Ran by multi-faceted-duo Zoe Robertson and Steve Snell, we began the day with an informative tour and talk on Dual Works: what is it, how it works, who uses it and why.

It was especially interesting hearing about Robertson’s dynamic and unique practice, incorporating and combining: music, performance, costume, installation, community, wearable art and fine art. This informed our challenge for the day – working as a group to develop a visual and audible performance using a range of materials and our bodies. We spent approximately an hour experimenting with plastic, metal, wood and fixings to create instruments, tools and wearables before working as a team to create a comprehensive performance incorporating patterns and messages.

Zoe and Steve immediately saw the potential and processes behind our creations and were endlessly supportive and encouraging. We all agreed it was a genuinely fun and creative experience and were inspired by these very talented and hardworking creatives.
