A talk about Nature as a ‘commons’ with Common Agency Projects artist Shane Waltener including a communal making activity and Q&A.
Common Agency Projects formed as a collaborative practice between artists Shane Waltener and Laura Glaser in response to our ‘We Are Commoners’ exhibition. They merge interests and experience in visual arts, dance and performance. During lockdown in 2020 they met weekly in parks and common spaces, experiencing the function of these spaces as new forums, cultural centres or theatres of the pandemic. Through observation, movement improvisation and play, the artists developed and rehearsed making and performance scores addressing the idea of Nature as a ‘commons’. Their interactions embrace the weather, the seasons, the site and all that grows in it. These ‘commoning’ actions are recorded to discuss with each other and interested park-goers.
“On so many levels, including personal and political, and for all of us, Nature and the environment are our remaining and shared common language” – Sean Swallow
The communal making activity, inspired by Sean Swallow’s quote, will be guided by Shane and involve attendees interpreting one of Common Agency Project’s written performance scores. The actions will prompt you to think about your locality and where Nature is to be found within it; what Nature means to you; the agency and transformative potential of materials in your environment; and the notion of ‘working with’ Nature.
Join Shane & Deirdre for a Q&A with Resurgence and Ecologist magazine editor Marianne Brown.
