This symposium, organised by Craftspace focuses on craft, making and materials. Speakers from the UK, Japan and Europe will discuss the
significant contribution to creative practice and wider thinking about culture made by artists showing in the exhibition.
It aims to provide a forum to explore opportunities for strategic collaboration between venues, artists, specialist organisations, groups and studios.

1.00 – 1.15 Welcome and introduction, Deirdre Figueiredo, Director, Craftspace
1.15 – 2.00 Keynote – Explorations in Creativity
Trevor Marchand, Emeritus Professor of Social Anthropology at SOAS will present his observations of ActionSpace artist Andrew Omoding’s creative processes and problem-solving tactics during a residency in 2016.

2.10 – 2.40 Mizue Kobayashi, Art Director, Social Welfare Organization Aiseikai – “Art Brut in Japan – it’s latest movements, spheres of activities and significance”.
2.45 – 2.55 A short film presentation of Erkki’s practice and environment featuring a discussion of the promotion of contemporary Finnish folk art. Appearing in the film: Erkki Pekkarinen, Radical Craft exhibitor; Raija Kallioinen, Coordinator for Cultural Affairs at Maaseudun Sivistysliitoo/Union for Rural Culture and Education; Mike Inglis, artist and lecturer, Edinburgh College of Art
3.00 – 3.30 Lutz Pillong, Atelier Goldstein, Germany – presentation on the work of Atelier Goldstein and their representation of artists, with a focus on his support of Julia Krause-Harder.
3.30 – 3.50 Tea break
4.00 – 4.30 Panel discussion: Sheryll Cato, ActionSpace; Katherine Long, Venture Arts; led by Deirdre Figueiredo, Craftspace
4.30 Opportunities/summing up
