The exhibition, on show from 27 September – 9 November 2018, will showcase Shelanu’s collections which demonstrate the achievements of this evolving craft social enterprise and its links to Birmingham’s centre of jewellery making.
“Having our own hallmark has brought a great sense of accomplishment but also motivation and confidence as a collective to keep on doing what we love.” Yeelah, Shelanu member.
Visitors will be able to see the Interlocking Stories jewellery range which was cast in the Jewellery Quarter. It celebrates the ethos of Shelanu; women coming together to learn new skills, collaborating and supporting each other in a safe space. They will also be able to see items from the group’s Migrating Birds jewellery range and their Birmingham Souvenir range which includes a purse, iPad case and a bag showing designs inspired by Birmingham’s architecture.
“Birmingham’s historic Jewellery Quarter has played an important role in the production of Shelanu’s jewellery ranges and has also provided a wealth of inspiration since the Collective began in 2010.
This exhibition is a milestone for the group, who are not formally trained. We are really proud of what they have achieved. We hope the exhibition will create new connections for the group in the Jewellery Quarter.” Emma Daker Exhibitions and Project Development Manager
