Crafting Pathways: Owen Robins and Michaela McMillan

Owen Robins and Michaela McMillan

Owen worked with artist Michaela McMillan at her studio in Rugby. She creates mixed media sculpture that tells stories and explores personal relationships and people who have shaped her life. Owen’s piece for the Made in the Middle exhibition is inspired by Michaela’s approach and process.

Precious Memories pays homage to Owen’s grandad, reflecting their close relationship. Working with decoupage and assemblage, his sculpture features imagery that represents his grandad’s hobbies – fishing and gardening. The piece includes small models that belonged to his grandad, and that he liked to paint.

Play was central to the creation of Owen’s sculpture. Rather than working to a strict plan, he allowed his imagination to direct how his piece would evolve. Repurposing materials was an important part of the process. Owen’s piece is constructed from defunct household items, including an old clock face and a bed post, transforming them into an object to be treasured.

As part of the project, Owen and Michaela visited Compton Verney Art Gallery and Park to see large scale sculptural artworks in an outdoor environment, and to visit the Folk Art collection.

“I’ve learnt a lot of new stuff and I know I’m putting a lot of hard work into it.”
