SUMMARY:Mending Stories at St Germains
DESCRIPTION:Makers Circle\, a new Birmingham based craft collective\, will be delivering Mending Stories; a series of stitch workshops that explore the value of mending\, repair and creative expression. \nIn today’s fast-paced world\, it is easy to throw away items that have lost their shine\, without considering their value or significance. However\, repairing these items can give them a new lease of life\, preserving their stories and memories for generations to come. These items have a unique value\, and by mending them\, we can not only extend their lifespan but also reconnect with the memories and emotions they hold. \nIn a series of workshops\, artists will demonstrate simple skills to repair and mend treasured textile items. These workshops encourage sustainability\, enable the learning of new skills and create meaningful connections with others in the community. \nPlease come along\, share your stories and help to create a community that values the items we own and the memories they hold. Join us on a journey towards sustainability and preserving the items that have personal meaning to us \nDrop-in workshops: \nSt Germains Community Hub\nMonday 15 & 22 May\, 11am – 1pm\nMonday 5 & 12 June\, 11am – 1pm \nFree. No booking required.

SUMMARY:Belonging to Us
DESCRIPTION:Nurturing women through making. \nThis exhibition tells the story of ten years of Shelanu: Women’s Craft Collective. \nAlso featuring work by eight other organisations\, it celebrates the social impact of projects which provide safe spaces for women’s creative development and the innovative and imaginative new products they create for the marketplace. Presenting work by social enterprises: The Flourish Jewellery Project\, MasterPeace Academy and Love Welcomes. \nShelanu\, which means ‘belonging to us’\, is a collective of migrant and refugee women working with Craftspace to develop craft skills\, confidence and well-being through social enterprise. They produce high quality craft inspired by their new home\, the city of Birmingham and their experiences of migration. As well as learning new making skills\, the women are supported to improve their English\, learn business skills and run workshops for the community. \nFor the Belonging to Us exhibition Shelanu launches Nurture\, a new range of jewellery made more sustainably\, produced with guidance from internationally renowned jeweller Rachael Colley. \nImage: Olive Branch brooch from the new Nurture Collection. SUMMARY:YARNING: Tales from Birmingham at Unravel Festival
DESCRIPTION:Knitter and textile artist Sara Fowles will be hosting a talk about her YARNING: Tales from Birmingham podcast series alongside Craftspace’s Deirdre Figueiredo at Unravel Festival.  \nBirmingham based textile artist Sara Fowles was commissioned by Craftspace to collect five stories on the heritage of yarn\, knit and textiles from within Birmingham’s Black community. They include her own story of her relationship to knit and yarn; family memories; how she learnt the skills; what knitting means to her and how it became a passion and obsession in her life and work. She will talk about her yarn journey and what she learnt from women who took part in her podcast series as well as debunking some myths that ‘black women don’t knit’. \nImage: Portrait of Sara Fowles. SUMMARY:{Queer} + {Metals} Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:How do ‘queerness’ and metalsmithing intersect? Alongside the exhibition this international panel discussion will explore ideas of transformation and queering materials. A US based panel includes Rebekah Frank\, Marcelo Ferreira Gustafsson\, Funlola Coker and Eleanor Rose. UK based artists are Daniel Fountain\, Roxanne Simone and Dauvit Alexander. The panel is chaired by Director of Craftspace\, Deirdre Figueiredo\, MBE \nPart of UK LGBT+ History month. \nFree\nBook your ticket \nYou can also join our live stream from 6.30pm – 8.30pm GMT/ 10.30am – 12.30pm PST/ 1.30pm – 3.30pm EST. \nThe {Queer} + {Metals} exhibition features artworks by 8 UK artists\, video interviews with 8 international artists and an Instagram campaign\, exploring the multiplicity of queerness through metalwork and metalsmithing. Viewed together in this context\, the artworks can be seen as an act of resistance. They are a means to empower\, affirm and express solidarity between LGBTQIA+ creatives\, making visible the ways they are shaping\, disrupting and contributing to contemporary culture. Rather than provide answers or fixed ideas\, the exhibition seeks to open up possibilities and make connections within a diverse\, intersectional\, complex and fluid community of making. \nImage: Roxanne Simone\, Canopic. SUMMARY:Crafting Conversations: talk with Woo Jin Joo
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fascinating in-conversation event with London based artist Woo Jin Joo. This event will offer an engaging insight into Woo Jin’s interests and practice as a mixed media artist specialising in soft sculpture and embroidery\, influenced by Asian philosophies\, traditions and culture\, and exploring how we perceive value in our consumerist society. \nWorking across a range of disciplines including drawing\, painting and textile art\, Woo Jin’s practice seeks to re-enchant and to reveal a lost poetry in everyday objects that are overlooked\, unnoticed\, replaceable or disposable. Woo Jin will talk about how she transforms ordinary objects\, giving them their own character and voice\, that brings them to life and encourages us to reassess their value in our day-to-day lives. \nTickets: \nCraftspace + members free priority booking \nNon-members: £5.00 \nImage: Woo Jin Joo\, A Long Long Time Ago (Embroidery\, old socks\, wire) 2022. \nCraftspace+\nMembership of the Craftspace+ community gives you priority access to special events and activities.
