SUMMARY:Shelanu @ Urban Jungle at RBSA Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Shelanu’s three collections: Interlocking Stories\, Migrating Birds and their souvenir range will be on show in this new exhibition. \nThe concrete architectural jungle of a city may seem very separate from a lush oasis. Every piece is hand-made by a designer-maker. \nAbout the RBSA\nThe Royal Birmingham Society of Artists (RBSA) is an artist-led charity which supports artists and promotes engagement with the visual arts. SUMMARY:Show Your Metal
DESCRIPTION:Image: Jordan Herry\, photo © Marion Stills \nThe very essence of the Metal sound was born out of the experience and consequences of working in Birmingham’s metal industry.  This exhibition connects metal the material and Metal the music. It features local jewellers Dauvit Alexander\, Daisy Grice and Jordan Herry whose work is inspired by culture and symbols associated with Metal and Rock. It also features a battle jacket with badges from gigs which took place at Birmingham Odeon in the late 70’s and early 80’s. \nRead more on the Show Your Metal page. \nYou can find the exhibition in the People’s Postcode Lottery Community Gallery at Midlands Arts Centre. \nHome of Metal \nThis exhibition is part of Home of Metal\, a celebration of Birmingham’s history of music running from May to September\, conceived and produced by Capsule\, supported by Arts Council England. \nHome of Metal shines a light on the global phenomenon of Heavy Metal with a series of blockbuster exhibitions devoted to the music that was born in and around Birmingham. Music that turned up the volume\, down-tuned the guitars\, and introduced a whole new meaning to the word ‘heavy’. The season of events and exhibitions will join the dots between music\, social history\, visual art and fan cultures to produce a new perspective on metal. One that is celebratory\, eschews notions of high/low culture\, and joins audiences and performers together. \nHome of Metal will present a series of exhibitions in partnership with organisations in and around Birmingham to include Black Sabbath – 50 Years\, at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery\, Monster Chetwynd: Hell Mouth 3 at Eastside Projects\, Alan Kane: 4 Bed Detached Home of Metal at The New Art Gallery Walsall and Przemek Branas at Centrala\, demonstrating Heavy Metal’s reach into all corners of culture through explorations of fantasy\, chaos\, performance and fandom.

SUMMARY:Crafting the Commons @ With For About Conference
DESCRIPTION:Join Deirdre Figueiredo to discuss Art and Democracy\, organised by Heart of Glass. \n23 May\, 9:30 am  —  5:30 pm\nFree (book in advance) \nDeirdre will be speaking at this year’s conference as we develop our upcoming exhibition on the theme of ‘the commons’: \n“The fourth annual With For About conference asks ‘Is art\, and the making of art\, the last frontier in the fight for democracy and the realisation of civil society?’. \nThe politics of our times have presented us with an unprecedented moment of re-evaluation. Our communities\, our values\, our social structures are in flux. \nCollaborative art has always presented a unique opportunity to engage meaningfully with these agendas\, to draw audiences into work in new and exciting ways and allow many to add their voices to commentary on these times. But as democratic deficits are felt by increasingly larger parts of our community what role can artists and art play? \nThis year we are joined by a host of speakers from across the globe\, including Jeanne van Heeswijk\, Jonas Staal\, Susanne Bosch\, Larry Achiampong\, A Blade of Grass\, Deirdre Figueiredo\, Brian Harnetty\, Heather Peak Morison and Rick Lowe.” \nConfirm details and book your place with The Heart of Glass. \nImage: Amy Twigger-Holroyd\, Reknit Spectrum Samples (Photo: Amy Twigger-Holroyd)

SUMMARY:MAC Craft Fellows: exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition was shown from 3rd November 2018 – 24th March 2019 \nFrom April to December 2019 we worked with MAC to support five recent graduates on their journey from postgraduate to confidently working as professional makers. \nThey were each commissioned to make new work to develop their practice since graduation. The work also showcased the journey they have been on during the fellowship programme. The exhibition at MAC was the culmination of their hard work. \nThe MAC Craft Fellowship Programme was made possible with support from The Headley Trust. \nImage: Craft Fellows 2018. SUMMARY:Lush Life Presents: An evening of Craftivism\, with Sarah Corbett & Friends
DESCRIPTION:Our Director\, Deirdre Figueiredo\, will be part of a panel for this event led by Sarah Corbett for Lush Life. If you can’t attend you can watch the live stream on the Lush Player. The event should be available to watch afterwards too. Sarah’s Gentle Protest exhibition is also on show . \n“Join Sarah Corbett\, award-winning activist and founder of the global Craftivist Collective\, for an evening exploring Craftivism. Sarah will be chairing a discussion on the use of craft and Craftivism for making change. Exploring what it is and how to use if for maximum impact. Sarah will be joined by Chris Gee\, Campaign Leader at WWF talking about how WWF are incorporating craftivism; Deirdre Figueiredo MBE\, Director of  Craftspace on the power of using craft for young people’s voices; and Alexi Duggins\, once Editor-at-Large of Time Out London\, now freelance journalist for the Guardian\, NME amongst others\, on how using Craftivism as a tool for campaigning can attract media to cover your issue. \nFollowing the discussion you are invited to join a Stitchable Change-maker Craftivism workshop. We know that changemakers aren’t superheroes; they’re just people who connect their values to their actions. Every single one of us has gifts and talents we can use to be the change we wish to see in the world. At key times we need to make time to slow down\, keep a cool head & think critically about how we can be positive change makers. We hope this ‘inner activism’ project is a useful tool & physical reminder of your journey as a craftivist & brilliant global citizen. \nThis event is part of a week long takeover of the Lush Life Channel by Craftivist Collective. A week exploring Craftivism with the aim of inspiring activists and non-activists alike with methods for starting conversations and making change.” \nYou can get more details and find out how to book here. \n(Image: Sarah Corbett leading a workshop for our Making for Change project.)
