DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Made in the Middle – Artist Development Event\nTuesday 26 March\, 7.00 – 8.30pm: Zoom\nThis event is for artists interested in applying for the Made in the Middle exhibition. \nCraftspace’s Exhibitions Manager Emma Daker will be introducing the exhibition in more detail and answering questions about the application process. \nRachel Butlin and Li-Chu Wu\, Made in the Middle 2016 exhibitors\, will be joining the event to talk about their experience of exhibiting. \nRachel Butlin\nRachel seeks to challenge the concepts of contemporary jewellery\, producing a range of high end \, mixed material pieces. She loves to challenge the way in which people perceive a piece\, by creating small scale sculpture that can be worn on the body\, in a way chosen by the wearer. Carefully considering material combination and placement\, her work often explores bespoke materials\, evoking curiosity between the piece and the wearer themselves.  She gathers materials in a collection\, waiting to explore them through combination and placement\, in a 3D drawing process. Drawing with materials is an essential part of her practice\, with linear forms\, featuring strongly alongside geometric shapes and spaces.” \nLi-Chu Wu\nOriginally from Taipei\, Taiwan\, Li-Chu is a contemporary designer jeweller based in the UK. Her art practice combines materials and layers\, distinguished by the subtle movement achieved through layers\, embodying a harmonious fusion of traditional metalsmithing techniques and new technologies. Exhibits worldwide. Currently works in the jewellery trade. DESCRIPTION:Will you be at this year’s Ferrous festival? \nHereford’s biannual international festival of artist blacksmithing returns from the 15th to 24th March 2024. \nShelanu Women’s Craft Collective will be there\, showcasing their jewellery and hosting workshops. You’ll be able to see Nurture\, a range of jewellery made sustainably\, produced with guidance from internationally renowned jeweller Rachael Colley\, and also examples of the Collective’s previous collections. \nShelanu members will be leading workshops on Friday 15th and Saturday  16th between 11.30am – 1.30pm and 2.30pm –4.30pm . \nUsing re-purposed costume jewellery and natural dyes\, people can have a go at making their own piece of jewellery inspired by the Nurture collection. You are welcome to bring your own broken pieces of costume jewellery to use in the workshop. Book a slot at the venue. \nCome and say hello!

SUMMARY:Caribbean Textiles and Craft Study Day
DESCRIPTION:This study day is co-organised by Craftspace and Birmingham City University’s Centre for Equality\, Diversity and Inclusion (CEDIA). It will be led by co-curators of Dorcas Stories from the Front Room exhibition Rose Sinclair and Deirdre Figueiredo and co-facilitated by Karen Patel\, Chair of CEDIA. \nA series of talks and in-conversation panels will explore themes in the exhibition including the lineage of Caribbean craft skills through migration\, the continued role of craft and textiles in shaping the Windrush legacy for new generations and the ways that today’s creatives of Caribbean descent draw on the wealth of their grandparents’ craft skills\, stories of making and Dorcas Club social change ethos.  We will also explore community voices and story telling through craft and address issues around decolonising the curriculum. Rose Sinclair will give a tour of the exhibition and provide an insight into her research into Dorcas Clubs. \nLunch and light refreshments included. \nBook your place.\nConcessions: If you are a student or unwaged you can purchase a ticket for £5. DESCRIPTION:Nurturing women through making. \nThis exhibition tells the story of ten years of Shelanu: Women’s Craft Collective. \nAlso featuring work by eight other organisations\, it celebrates the social impact of projects which provide safe spaces for women’s creative development and the innovative and imaginative new products they create for the marketplace. Presenting work by social enterprises: The Flourish Jewellery Project\, MasterPeace Academy and Love Welcomes. \nShelanu\, which means ‘belonging to us’\, is a collective of migrant and refugee women working with Craftspace to develop craft skills\, confidence and well-being through social enterprise. They produce high quality craft inspired by their new home\, the city of Birmingham and their experiences of migration. DESCRIPTION:How do ‘queerness’ and metalsmithing intersect? Alongside the exhibition this international panel discussion will explore ideas of transformation and queering materials. A US based panel includes Rebekah Frank\, Marcelo Ferreira Gustafsson\, Funlola Coker and Eleanor Rose. UK based artists are Daniel Fountain\, Roxanne Simone and Dauvit Alexander. The panel is chaired by Director of Craftspace\, Deirdre Figueiredo\, MBE \nPart of UK LGBT+ History month. \nFree\nBook your ticket \nYou can also join our live stream from 6.30pm – 8.30pm GMT/ 10.30am – 12.30pm PST/ 1.30pm – 3.30pm EST. \nThe {Queer} + {Metals} exhibition features artworks by 8 UK artists\, video interviews with 8 international artists and an Instagram campaign\, exploring the multiplicity of queerness through metalwork and metalsmithing. Viewed together in this context\, the artworks can be seen as an act of resistance. They are a means to empower\, affirm and express solidarity between LGBTQIA+ creatives\, making visible the ways they are shaping\, disrupting and contributing to contemporary culture. DESCRIPTION:Craftspace invites the people of Birmingham to hand-make gifts for the 4600 athletes competing in the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games\n\n\n\n\n\n4600 Gifts is an invitation to you\, your friends and your neighbours to join in welcoming athletes to the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. \n\n\nTogether\, we will make 4600 hand-embellished gifts\, upcycling locally-sourced materials into messages of welcome\, made with love in Brum. \nJoin in one of our workshops in Cathedral Square to turn a simple blank gift template into a one-off\, beautiful object that will be treasured forever by our visitors from the Commonwealth. \nCrafters don’t need any experience or know-how to take part; we provide everything needed to wrap\, knot and stitch. \nThe finished gifts and personal messages will be presented to a visiting athlete when they arrive for the Games in July. \nEach gift will carry a message of welcome from one hand to another\, marking a special moment in time for Birmingham. \nFriday 13th May 2.30pm-5.30pm\nSaturday 14th May 10am-6.30pm\nSunday 15th May 11am-5.00pm\nCathedral Square\, Birmingham \nBook your place on Eventbrite \n4600 Gifts is produced by Craftspace\, as part of the Birmingham 2022 Festival\, with generous support from Arts Council England and The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
