DESCRIPTION:Join co-curators\, Director of Craftspace Deirdre Figueiredo and artist Dauvit Alexander\, for an informal tour of the {Queer} + {Metals} exhibition. Featuring artworks by 7 UK artists\, video interviews with 8 international artists and an Instagram campaign\, this exhibition explores the multiplicity of queerness through metalwork and metalsmithing. Viewed together in this context\, the artworks can be seen as an act of resistance. They are a means to empower\, affirm and express solidarity between LGBTQIA+ creatives\, making visible the ways they are shaping\, disrupting and contributing to contemporary culture. Have a chat with Kitt about their experience of developing eco drag characters through ‘planet-kind’ drag crafts (drag costume\, wig & prop making using recycled\, natural and low environmental impact materials and processes). \nAll welcome\, no creative experience required\, materials and tools provided. SUMMARY:Crafting Conversations: talk & workshop with Mahawa Keita
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an inspiring evening of making and conversation with Birmingham based artist Mahawa Keita. Hear the personal stories behind her work\, her migration from Senegal through Gambia to the UK and how her textile pieces express self-identity\, confidence\, culture and memories. \nWe will also learn how to make African ‘stick dolls’ together\, exploring our own stories through making and re-using materials to create our keepsakes. We will use simple techniques and no experience is necessary. \nCrafting Conversations are small events\, giving you the chance to meet artists and find out more about their practice through conversation\, questions and making. Places are limited with priority booking for Craftspace+ members. \nMahawa is a textile artist and recent graduate of Birmingham City University\, she was selected for In:Site 2022 and was part of the artists’ design team who developed the gift for the athletes of the Commonwealth Games and helped the people of Birmingham to create 4600 Gifts. \nTickets: \nCraftspace + members free priority booking \nNon-members: £8.00 \nImage: Mahawa Keita \nCraftspace+\nMembership of the Craftspace+ community gives you priority access to special events and activities.
