The artists represent the region’s vibrant and diverse creative community and include both emerging talents and established names.\n\nAlongside Made in the Middle you’ll also be able to see Saba Khan: Riverless Water. An exhibition which explores environmental transformation\, displacement and migration. Rooted in South Asian water histories\, it features paintings\, interviews and an installation examining the impact of the Mangla Dam’s construction in the 1960s\, which led to the mass migration of people from Mirpur\, Pakistan\, to Birmingham.\n\nAlso on show is the Made at MAC: Creative Family Showcase. A mixed-media exhibition showcasing the fantastic work created by children\, young people and families on MAC’s creative courses.

DESCRIPTION:Made in the Middle artists\, Roo Dhissou and Nilupa Yasmin show work which reflects on how Midlands culture and\ncreativity is influenced\, strengthened and enriched by individual and community connections to a global diaspora. \nWorkshops\nJugaad Weaving with Roo Dhissou \n15th December\, 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM at the Craft Hub in Art Park \nJugaad is a Hindi and Punjabi word that means being inventive\, resourceful\, and making do with what you already have and finding clever solutions. In this hands-on workshop\, artist Roo Dhissou and Craftspace\, invite you to embrace that spirit through DIY weaving. Make a simple cardboard loom\, learn how to warp it correctly\, and then weave a small tapestry using everyday materials such as scrap yarn\, fabric strips\, plastic\, or paper. Roo will share tips on colour\, texture\, and finishing\, along with ideas for turning household waste into unique woven surfaces. \nWeave with Paper  \n16th December\, 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM at the Children’s Workshop Area in Art Park \nNilupa Yasmin is a British artist who weaves with photographic paper. This hands-on workshop is inspired by her artwork Baiyn বায়ন which means ‘weaving’ in Bengali. The technique references the handwoven shitalpati (a traditional Bengali mat). Participants will learn a simple weaving technique and use strips of paper to playfully experiment with pattern and colour. If you have photographs you wish to recycle bring them along. \n

Previously\, he was Deputy Curator at Bonington Gallery\, where he curated exhibitions by Osheen Siva\, Emily Andersen\, and Andrew Logan\, and was Co-Director of TG gallery (2014-2023). \n  \n  \n  \nAmelia Lawrence \n\n\n\n\nAmelia (she/her) has worked in the craft sector for over 20 years. Previously having worked at Craft Potters’ Association and Embroiderers’ Guild. She is Sector Support Manager at Crafts Council where she has been working for coming up to 10 years. In her current role she manages the Crafts Council directory and sector network Craft UK. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nVaruna Kaur Kollanethu \n \n\nVaruna is the Founder\, Director\, and Curator of Ruup & Form\, a London-based gallery specialising in contemporary\, material-led art\, design\, and  \ncraft. With a background enriched by diverse curatorial experience and formal training\, Varuna approa \nches her work with a distinct\, multifaceted perspective. Relocating from India in 2005\, she holds MAs in Journalism and Curating Contemporary Design. Established in 2019\, her gallery reflects her belief in art’s transformative potential for cultural preservation and social progress. Varuna’s curatorial approach centres on rigorous artist research and in-depth exploration of conceptual themes and artistic expression. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nRichard Foot  \n \nRichard’s fascination with the world of Craft was ignited through his sister\, Helen Foot\, a talented woven textile designer. On visits to her whilst she was studying at the Royal College of Art and in assisting her at various Craft Shows\, Richard was struck by the number of talented Makers and their beautiful creations.  \nAn opportunity presented itself through the Crafts Council’s Hothouse scheme\, which Helen participated in 2011. Together with my friend Arron\, we produced a film featuring her for the open film submission for The Power of Making exhibition\, held at the prestigious V&A in London.  \nThis marked the birth of R&A Collaborations\, a venture that has spanned over a decade\, during which they crafted short films of makers in their studios\, sharing their stories and promoting their incredible work. Their adventures took them across the United Kingdom and beyond\, London\, Paris\, Milan and Goole\, immersing us in the vibrant world of Craft Makers.  \nHowever\, as 2023 unfolded\, change beckoned\, and the time came for R&A Collaborations to conclude. From this point\, Richard’s new solo venture\, #CRAFT🧡\, was born. Richard has worked with a few makers on new projects and at the end of 2023 he began working part time for Design-Nation as their Events and Exhibitions Lead organising group showcases such as Collect at Somerset house.  \n  \nEmma Daker \nEmma (she/her) is Exhibitions and Project Development Manager for Craftspace and co-curator of Made in the Middle. Emma has 20 years’ experience of managing and curating touring exhibitions. Recent touring projects are ‘We are Commoners: Creative acts of Commoning’ and ‘Radical Craft: Alternative Ways of Making’ in partnership with Outside In. She also leads on strategic work around migrant and refugee women including managing Shelanu: Women’s Craft Collective and the Women’s Maker Movement project.  \n\n\n\n\nRefreshments\n\n\n\nDrinks are provided. There is a café onsite for lunch\, or you can bring your own. \n\nMade in the Middle\nPart of the Made in the Middle exhibition programme. The exhibition will be on show in the main gallery.

DESCRIPTION:Join Shelanu at The Exchange for a special evening hosted by the University of Birmingham and other city-based organisations supporting refugees. Through stories\, music and art\, we’ll be celebrating the contributions of refugees\, standing together in advocating for their rights and protection worldwide. \nCome along and decorate a key ring to take home. \nRefugee Week’s theme this year is “Community is our Superpower”. Shelanu have been exploring this theme by thinking about community activities and peoples’ hobbies as a superpower\, because they support mental health\, well-being and combat loneliness by creating friendships. \nShelanu members will share a drawing technique to help you to draw your own idea of Community as a Superpower on a polymer clay shape\, which you can then make into a keyring. \nWe will also be selling our jewellery ranges. \nThe evening will also include: \n\nLive conversations\nLive music\nMembers of Stories of Hope and Home will share their lived experiences

This year’s issue brings together just a selection of the exhibitions\, displays\, and community projects in the Midlands that have addressed LGBTQ+ experiences and histories\, and spotlights queer artworks and objects in local museum and gallery collections. It includes material that reflects on objects and practices in Leicester\, Walsall\, Coventry\, Birmingham\, and Wolverhampton. \nThis launch event is designed to complement and augment the articles in this issue\, through short talks by artists and practitioners that reflect further on the processes\, possibilities\, and challenges of doing queer work in museums and galleries\, in the Midlands and outside of it\, and in the present and over time. Lunch will be provided\, with space for more informal discussion and networking. \nA full schedule for the event is forthcoming.
