SUMMARY:Radical Craft: Alternative Ways of Making - Walford Mill Crafts
DESCRIPTION:See the show at the final venue Walford Mill Crafts\, Dorset. 16 September – 31 October 2017. \nDue to the size of the venue a smaller selection of work is on display. For this showing Willem van Genk’s work is on display Priest’s House Museum in Wimborne. \nCarving in miniature (toothpicks and pencil leads)\, reworking found objects from places like the River Thames and hospital grounds\, wrapping\, covering and epic missions in model making are all ways in which the self-taught artists in this exhibition practice and make work outside the mainstream. \nThe exhibition\, which is co-curated by Laura Hamilton\, features 34 international and UK artists who express their creativity unbounded by taught conventions. \nIt includes artworks by historically renowned artists associated with Outsider Art and contemporary self-taught artists who see themselves as facing barriers to the art world for reasons including health\, disability\, social circumstance or isolation; 21 of whom have been selected from open submissions. \nMost have never received any formal art training\, although their practices may have been nurtured and encouraged in specialist centres or studios. Their work or\, creative impulses have been developed with an obvious inventiveness and independence\, which is rarely aimed at a particular audience\, public recognition or marketplace. \nMore about the exhibition here…

SUMMARY:James Gladwell: The Dreams - Pallant House Gallery
DESCRIPTION:James Gladwell’s first solo exhibition\, The Dreams is organised by Outside In and Pallant House Gallery. \nJames won the coveted Outside In Award for his work featured in the 2016 Craftspace exhibition Radical Craft: Alternative Ways of Making. His prize is this solo show at Pallant House Gallery. \nJames is a textile artist who creates his work at Barrington Farm in Norfolk. This exhibition of his embroideries depicts mermaids\, masks\, mushrooms and other images drawn from James’ dreams. \nJames’ delicately stitched artwork Foreign Birds features in Outside In’s exhibition Radical Craft: Alternative Ways of Making\, which continues its national tour until November 2017. At the preview of Radical Craft\, renowned Outsider Artist Marie-Rose Lortet selected James to be the Outside In Award Winner for 2016. Lortet said of her selection: \n“I chose James Gladwell because of my sensitivity to\, and my knowledge of threads. In Foreign Birds I see the air [space] in between\, and it feels as if you are gliding over the world. I believe the artist searches for serenity and calm through his work.” \nJames draws directly onto found pieces of fabric\, before stitching over the intricate designs with colourful cotton threads. His drawings express whatever is of interest to him at the time; memories\, dreams\, television shows or the world around him. Stitching is something that is portable\, relaxing and satisfies his need to create. \nThere are more details on the Pallant House website. \nOpening hours of Pallant House Gallery\nTuesday-Saturday: 10am-5pm\nThursday: 10am-8pm\nSunday/Bank Holidays: 11am-5pm\nMonday: Closed\nPlease note: Outside In staff are not present throughout all these opening hours and some members of staff are part-time. \nAdmission\nAdult £10 / £11 with Gift Aid\nChildren (6-16 years) Free\nStudents Free\nArt Fund members  £5 / £6 with Gift Aid\nFriends\, Unwaged\, Carer\, Museum Association Free\nGroup Bookings (10 people or more) Visit Pallant House Gallery website for more info\nSchools/College Group (free for all accompanying staff) Contact Pallant House Gallery for more info\nThursday Evenings (General Admission) 5-8pm Free\nThursday Evenings (main temporary exhibitions) 5-8pm £5 / £6 with Gift Aid\nEntrance is free to Art Fund members when no temporary exhibitions are on show

SUMMARY:Radical Craft: Alternative Ways of Making - 20-21 Visual Arts Centre
DESCRIPTION:Due to the temporary closure of parts of Church Square at 20-21 Visual Arts Centre\, some areas of the Radical Craft exhibition are not currently open to the public.

SUMMARY:Radical Craft: Art as Communication - panel discussion
DESCRIPTION:Saturday 21 May\, 2 – 4pm\n£7 (£5 Friends of the Gallery) \nFor many of the artists involved with Outside In\, communicating using language is not possible.
