SUMMARY:Made in the Middle: Panel Conversation
DESCRIPTION:How has global migration and diaspora contributed to life and culture in the Midlands?\n\nThursday 12 March\, 6pm – 7:30pm | The Hexagon\, Midlands Arts Centre\, Cannon Hill Park\, Birmingham\, B12 9QH | Free\, but booking essential.\n\nJoin Craftspace Director Deirdre Figueiredo; artists Roo Dhissou\, Christopher Day and Abigail Villarroel; curator Marta Marsicka; and Creative Black Country Creative Director Parminder Dosanjh for a conversation on how life\, culture and creativity in the Midlands is influenced\, strengthened and enriched by migration and individual and community connections to a global diaspora.\n\nThis could be through heritage\, lived experiences\, ideas\, thinking and social\, human or cultural practices. They will consider the following questions:\n\n\nHow does the way panellists engage and live their lives offer expansive world views and alternative ways of being?\nAre there particular community\, faith\, beliefs or value systems\, such as care\, reciprocity\, hospitality and service that come into play and are shared?\nAre there indigenous traditions in craft\, customs or language that encourages a sense of plurality and help us to reimagine a more just future?\nAre there concepts such as ‘jugaad’*  that are shared with the wider community that contribute low-cost opportunities for problem solving?\n\nWe invite attendees to share their thoughts and stories in the Q&A. \nPhoto: Under the Influence V by Chris Day. Photo by Agata Pec\, Courtesy of Vessel Gallery. \n*Jugaad is a Hindi/Urdu term for a colloquial\, innovative\, and frugal\, “makeshift” solution or a clever workaround to a complex problem\, often using limited resources.

SUMMARY:Serendipity Arts Festival
DESCRIPTION:Made in the Middle artists\, Roo Dhissou and Nilupa Yasmin show work which reflects on how Midlands culture and\ncreativity is influenced\, strengthened and enriched by individual and community connections to a global diaspora. \nWorkshops\nJugaad Weaving with Roo Dhissou \n15th December\, 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM at the Craft Hub in Art Park \nJugaad is a Hindi and Punjabi word that means being inventive\, resourceful\, and making do with what you already have and finding clever solutions. In this hands-on workshop\, artist Roo Dhissou and Craftspace\, invite you to embrace that spirit through DIY weaving. Make a simple cardboard loom\, learn how to warp it correctly\, and then weave a small tapestry using everyday materials such as scrap yarn\, fabric strips\, plastic\, or paper. Roo will share tips on colour\, texture\, and finishing\, along with ideas for turning household waste into unique woven surfaces. \nWeave with Paper  \n16th December\, 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM at the Children’s Workshop Area in Art Park \nNilupa Yasmin is a British artist who weaves with photographic paper. This hands-on workshop is inspired by her artwork Baiyn বায়ন which means ‘weaving’ in Bengali. The technique references the handwoven shitalpati (a traditional Bengali mat). Participants will learn a simple weaving technique and use strips of paper to playfully experiment with pattern and colour. If you have photographs you wish to recycle bring them along. \n

On visits to her whilst she was studying at the Royal College of Art and in assisting her at various Craft Shows\, Richard was struck by the number of talented Makers and their beautiful creations.  \nAn opportunity presented itself through the Crafts Council’s Hothouse scheme\, which Helen participated in 2011. Together with my friend Arron\, we produced a film featuring her for the open film submission for The Power of Making exhibition\, held at the prestigious V&A in London.  \nThis marked the birth of R&A Collaborations\, a venture that has spanned over a decade\, during which they crafted short films of makers in their studios\, sharing their stories and promoting their incredible work. SUMMARY:Introduction to Made in the Middle
DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Made in the Middle – Artist Development Event\nTuesday 26 March\, 7.00 – 8.30pm: Zoom\nThis event is for artists interested in applying for the Made in the Middle exhibition. \nCraftspace’s Exhibitions Manager Emma Daker will be introducing the exhibition in more detail and answering questions about the application process. \nRachel Butlin and Li-Chu Wu\, Made in the Middle 2016 exhibitors\, will be joining the event to talk about their experience of exhibiting. \nRachel Butlin\nRachel seeks to challenge the concepts of contemporary jewellery\, producing a range of high end \, mixed material pieces. She loves to challenge the way in which people perceive a piece\, by creating small scale sculpture that can be worn on the body\, in a way chosen by the wearer. Carefully considering material combination and placement\, her work often explores bespoke materials\, evoking curiosity between the piece and the wearer themselves.  She gathers materials in a collection\, waiting to explore them through combination and placement\, in a 3D drawing process. Drawing with materials is an essential part of her practice\, with linear forms\, featuring strongly alongside geometric shapes and spaces.” \nLi-Chu Wu\nOriginally from Taipei\, Taiwan\, Li-Chu is a contemporary designer jeweller based in the UK. Her art practice combines materials and layers\, distinguished by the subtle movement achieved through layers\, embodying a harmonious fusion of traditional metalsmithing techniques and new technologies. Exhibits worldwide. Currently works in the jewellery trade. She demonstrates expertise in crafting contemporary jewellery\, working in fine jewellery and antique jewellery world. \nBooking information\nBook your free ticket here. \nBooking closes on Monday 25 March at 5.00pm. \nThe session will be held via Zoom. You don’t need a Zoom account\, nor do you have to download Zoom. You can join directly through your internet browser. The Zoom invite and joining instructions will be emailed to you when you book. \nAutomatic closed captions will be available. There is a BSL film of the application information here.
