SUMMARY:Stories of Breath
DESCRIPTION:Step into a multi-sensory world where stories unfold through imagery\, sound and hands-on making. \nStories of Breath weaves together art\, craft\, science and storytelling to explore the invisible inequalities in the air and how we breathe. This powerful immersive experience brings stories to life through textile sculptures\, sound installations and hands-on making.\n\nStories of Breath was created by the participants and collaborators of Women and Asthma\, a public engagement project involving artists\, scientists and women from Birmingham\, Skelmersdale and Tower Hamlets.\nWe have been working with Imperial College London exploring how women experience asthma.

SUMMARY:Shelanu Keyring Workshop for World Refugee Week
DESCRIPTION:Join Shelanu at The Exchange for a special evening hosted by the University of Birmingham and other city-based organisations supporting refugees. Through stories\, music and art\, we’ll be celebrating the contributions of refugees\, standing together in advocating for their rights and protection worldwide. \nCome along and decorate a key ring to take home. \nRefugee Week’s theme this year is “Community is our Superpower”. Shelanu have been exploring this theme by thinking about community activities and peoples’ hobbies as a superpower\, because they support mental health\, well-being and combat loneliness by creating friendships. \nShelanu members will share a drawing technique to help you to draw your own idea of Community as a Superpower on a polymer clay shape\, which you can then make into a keyring. \nWe will also be selling our jewellery ranges. \nThe evening will also include: \n\nLive conversations\nLive music\nMembers of Stories of Hope and Home will share their lived experiences

SUMMARY:Midlands Art Papers Launch: Queer Work in Museums and Galleries
DESCRIPTION:Book your free ticket on Eventbrite. \nJoin us to launch the latest issue of Midlands Art Papers\, which focuses on queer work in museums and galleries. It includes material that reflects on objects and practices in Leicester\, Walsall\, Coventry\, Birmingham\, and Wolverhampton. \nThis launch event is designed to complement and augment the articles in this issue\, through short talks by artists and practitioners that reflect further on the processes\, possibilities\, and challenges of doing queer work in museums and galleries\, in the Midlands and outside of it\, and in the present and over time. Lunch will be provided\, with space for more informal discussion and networking. \nA full schedule for the event is forthcoming. Speakers include: \n\nExodus Crooks (artist)\nDeirdre Figueiredo (Craftspace Director)\nCharan Singh (artist)\nMatt Smith (artist)\nJohn Yeadon (artist)\n\nDeirdre will use {Queer} + {Metals} project and exhibition as a case study to highlight an LGBTQ+ led\, collaborative and enquiring journey between Deirdre Figueiredo\, Dauvit Alexander and Rebekah Frank which resulted in a unique exhibition\, an Instagram showcase\, essays\, video interviews and artists’ responses to questions about queerness and metalworking. \nThere is something in the resilience and transformative capacity of metal that is\, at least to me\, reminiscent of the queer experience. – Amparo Pons Grau (she/her)\, Artist \nQueerness is a rejection of binaries and residing in a life in the in-between. – Cate Richards (they/them)\, Artist \nThis event will take place in LOB 101 at the Library Of Birmingham. SUMMARY:Lush Life Presents: An evening of Craftivism\, with Sarah Corbett & Friends
DESCRIPTION:Our Director\, Deirdre Figueiredo\, will be part of a panel for this event led by Sarah Corbett for Lush Life. If you can’t attend you can watch the live stream on the Lush Player. The event should be available to watch afterwards too. Sarah’s Gentle Protest exhibition is also on show . \n“Join Sarah Corbett\, award-winning activist and founder of the global Craftivist Collective\, for an evening exploring Craftivism. Sarah will be chairing a discussion on the use of craft and Craftivism for making change. Exploring what it is and how to use if for maximum impact. Sarah will be joined by Chris Gee\, Campaign Leader at WWF talking about how WWF are incorporating craftivism; Deirdre Figueiredo MBE\, Director of  Craftspace on the power of using craft for young people’s voices; and Alexi Duggins\, once Editor-at-Large of Time Out London\, now freelance journalist for the Guardian\, NME amongst others\, on how using Craftivism as a tool for campaigning can attract media to cover your issue. \nFollowing the discussion you are invited to join a Stitchable Change-maker Craftivism workshop. We know that changemakers aren’t superheroes; they’re just people who connect their values to their actions. Every single one of us has gifts and talents we can use to be the change we wish to see in the world. At key times we need to make time to slow down\, keep a cool head & think critically about how we can be positive change makers. We hope this ‘inner activism’ project is a useful tool & physical reminder of your journey as a craftivist & brilliant global citizen. \nThis event is part of a week long takeover of the Lush Life Channel by Craftivist Collective. A week exploring Craftivism with the aim of inspiring activists and non-activists alike with methods for starting conversations and making change.” \nYou can get more details and find out how to book here. \n(Image: Sarah Corbett leading a workshop for our Making for Change project.)

SUMMARY:Alice Kettle in conversation with Aradne and Ian Sherman
DESCRIPTION:£10 (Friends of the Gallery £8.50\, Students £9) \nAradne makes jewel-like figurative stitched works. She also wrote the chapter ‘Outside\, Inside and In Between’ for Hand Stitch Perspectives (2012)\, which illustrated work of artists who consider themselves outside of the artistic mainstream. \n*If you are an Outside In artist\, you can book this event for the discounted price of £5.00 – simply mention this when you book. \nImage: Aradne\, The Gathering
