Made in the Middle: Tell us your making story

We’re looking for stories of everyday making in the Midlands!

Do you make as a hobby, for wellbeing, as a form of activism, for self-expression or with a group, community or club? We want to hear from you!

We’re collecting stories of ‘everyday makers’ in the Midlands whose work shows the influence of migration on creativity, craft skills and techniques. We are looking for stories of people from the global majority and Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia to celebrate the diversity of the Midlands.

What’s involved?

We want to tell your stories of everyday making, capturing these through short films, photography, audio podcasts and written interviews.  We’ll be looking at your inspirations and influences, the impact of craft & making, sharing skills and techniques, and more.

If you’re interested, or know someone with a story to share, fill out our information form or contact us using the form/details below.

We’ll contact you to find out more. If we select your story we will work together with you to decide how best to tell your crafting story. We might take photographs of you and your work, record  an interview in sound or writing or even make a short film. This might take place at your home, at the space you use to craft, or somewhere in your local area or community. This will vary, as we capture a range of people, practices & places.

Who are we looking for?

We’re looking to feature stories with a range in gender, age, socio-economic background, and diversity in terms of the global majority and Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia. The people featured should be based in the Midlands, with a specific focus on Birmingham, the Black Country and Leicester.

We’re also looking for a diversity in craft practices & mediums, whether that is textiles, embroidery, pottery, woodwork, a special technique that has been passed down in your family or community, a practice you have developed – we have an open scope.

How do I apply?

If you, or someone you know, would be a good fit or you’re keen to know more, then please get in touch. You can do that by:

  • Filling out our form to share more about your story and register your interest here.
  • Sending us a message, WhatsApp or giving us a call on 07394 745865
  • Emailing us at [email protected].

Get in touch as soon as you can!
