Project Summary

Explorations by Slow Craft

You can watch the film by clicking the link in the gallery above.

We are working on another phase of this project in partnership with Bealtaine Festival http://bealtaine.com and the Office of Public Works (OPW) at Rathfarnham Castle in Dublin. A group of older people are collaborating with artists Maeve Clancy and Liz Nilsson continuing to explore the history of the castle and objects from their own homes. Lookout for a blog coming soon.

This exhibition is the result of a creative project developed by Bealtaine Festival and Craftspace in partnership with the Office of Public Works. The aim of this project is to bring alive and interpret the history, stories and architecture of Rathfarnham Castle, through a creative process that allows time to connect, build relationships, reflect, share knowledge and lived experience.

A group of local residents collaborated with Dublin and London based artists Maeve Clancy and Linda Florence over a period of three months to create the work. The participants learned craft skills from the two artists, as well as delving into the history and stories of the Castle building, its architectural and decorative details, and their own associations with and histories of the locality. Through a process including photography, drawing, paper cutting, mono printing and screen printing, they have made both individual and collective responses to a shared heritage.

The project exemplifies how a focus on craft enables social interaction as well as being able to facilitate and foster connections between people of different ages and backgrounds and also between organisations.
