Visitors to the unit have the opportunity to nominate an area of Birmingham in need of her attentions.
Mrs Smith's message for the people of Birmingham:
“I am sure we all know of dreary spots in our neighbourhoods . I’d be very pleased to hear if you have any particular suggestions of woeful public spaces or unloved and forgotten public artworks worthy of my attentions. I’m hoping to put Birmingham on next year’s travel ...plan, so keep your eyes peeled”
A ballot box is now on our Curious About Craft touring unit.
Look at the diary for dates and venues of next events.
A mobile exhibition travelling to 40 wards in Birmingham from Sept 2010 to March 2011, giving local people the opportunity to see and take part in craft with a difference.
Curious about Craft explores craftivism – the contemporary approach which uses craft to encourage connections between people and to express the issues they care about. Making by hand offers alternatives to mass-produced goods, as one-off and personal. It’s a way of generating communities, thinking differently and enjoying a slower more sustainable life.
We’ll be showing artworks that use craft for social actions, play with new ways of making and unusual materials and we’ll sometimes turn up in surprising places. There will be opportunities to participate in everything from street art , DIY bags and creative mending to guerrilla gardening.
This is a chance for people to use their hands, share skills, make time to think and have fun.
It will also have information and resources about ways in which people can carry on making, including courses and activities in Birmingham.
Curious about Craft is part of Birmingham City Council’s Arts on the Move initiative using motorised Arts vehicles to bring participatory arts activities to the residents of every ward throughout the city. These projects support cultural provision in the constituencies as part of the ‘Culture on your doorstep’ element of the Cultural Strategy.
Developing people, ideas and opportunities through contemporary craft.
