The Knitting Salon

Project Summary

The Knitting Salon is an artist-led project that actively promotes the sharing and learning of knitting skills through sociable events in public spaces. It is led by artist-curator Trevor Pitt in association with artist Kate Pemberton. Design and construction of The Knitting Salon is produced in association with Craftspace.

The Knitting Salon events and activities involve a group of experienced knitters teaching people the basics of 'how to knit' using a mobile environment that has been specially designed by artists Trevor Pitt and Kate Pemberton.

The mobile salon comprises of easy to assemble flat-packed furniture that has been customised and altered by experienced knitters using a variety techniques.

As part of the project groups of knitters and artists will be commissioned to make one of ten Salon Benches and ten Salon Chairs using instruction kits and materials supplied by The Knitting Salon.

When assembled the salon creates a stimulating peripatetic learning environment that enables 1-2-1 sharing experiences to take place in a convivial atmosphere.

The mobile salon can adapt to variety public situations; from small intimate gatherings through to large scale festivals and events.

The Knitting Salon was launched as part of Craftivism at the Arnolfini in Bristol www.arnolfini.org.uk
