The
Craftspace Collective alongside professional artists and new graduates
and in partnership with VSM (UK)
Ltd., and their Husqvarna Viking sewing machines helped visitors to
the Clothes Show Live at Birmingham’s NEC create a giant art
intervention responding to the theme of
‘consumers being socially responsible’.

This project is aimed at diverse young people aged 16 – 25 from inner city Birmingham (some of whom are not in education, employment and training, NEETS) but who have some interest/ability in the arts. The project focuses on ideas of Guerrilla craft, DIY Craft and Craftivism.
The group has grown during 2011, working with professional designer makers and Craftspace to plan and deliver interventions, events and workshops in and around Birmingham. 2012 will also see them publishing their own guerilla craft kit book.
We want young people to develop a shared interest in making, to have a voice/express opinions and to explore theirs’ and other’s creativity. Through the development of the collective they might want to explore:
· Thinking through craft
· The relationship between craft and youth culture
· The relationship between craft and current social, political and economic conditions (credit crunch/global economic crises)
We are also interested in identifying concrete things that young people can get out of the project (e.g. arts award/mentoring opportunities/signposting as appropriate).
We have worked in collaboration with the Colmore Business District in Birmingham, Husqvarna Viking sewing machines a the Clothes Show Live.
Developing people, ideas and opportunities through contemporary craft.
